Its metabolism (including inhibition of hepatic glycogen isogenesis) is activated via the LKB1-AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) pathway.

This product is a hypoglycaemic agent. It reduces fasting and postprandial hyperglycaemia and HbAlc by 1% to 2% in patients with type II diabetes.

The mechanism by which this product lowers blood glucose may be:
