Ergosterol is an important sterol found in fungi and some plants.
It is an important component of fungal cell membranes and plays an important role in ensuring the integrity of cell membranes, the activity of membrane-bound enzymes, membrane fluidity, cell viability, and the transport of cellular substances. Ergosterol is also a precursor for the production of vitamin D2 and an intermediate in the production of hormone drugs, which can be used to produce cortisone.
Ergosterol appears as a colourless bright leafy crystal or white crystalline powder with no specific odour, soluble in trichloromethane, ethanol, ether and benzene and insoluble in water. Uses of Ergosterol.
Ergosterol is a biological precursor of vitamin D2 and is found in the cell membranes of fungi and some protozoa such as trypanosomes. Ergosterol is used in functional studies of antifungal drugs such as amphotericin B and its analogues, and in studies of the ergosterol biosynthetic pathway in various fungi.
Chemical Properties of Ergosterol.
Colourless needle-like or flaky crystals. Soluble in ethanol, ether, benzene and trichloromethane, insoluble in water. Vitamin D is prepared by dissolving ergosterol in solvents such as chloroform, ether or cyclohexane, adding it to a flask of quartz glass and irradiating it with ultraviolet light.
