Genipin powder Usage and Synthesis.

Genipin is the product of hydrolysis of gardenia glycoside by β-glucosidase, it is a kind of excellent natural biological cross-linking agent, it can cross-link with protein, collagen, gelatin and chitosan to make biological material, such as artificial bone, wound dressing material, etc. Its toxicity is much lower than glutaraldehyde and other commonly used chemical cross-linking agents. It is also used to treat liver diseases, lower blood pressure, and laxative. Results of a study at an Israeli medical centre showed that genipin can alleviate the symptoms of type II diabetes. Genipin can also be used as a fingerprinting reagent and as a cross-linking agent for the preparation of immobilised enzymes.

Genipin a natural cross-linking agent extracted from the fruit of Gardenia jasminoides. It prevents lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide production. Genipin protects hippocampal neurons from Alzheimer′s disease β-amyloid toxicity. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic effects.
