What is α-Lipoic Acid?
Lipoic acid, with the molecular formula C8H14O2S2, is an organic compound that acts as a coenzyme in the acyl transfer process of metabolism, eliminating free radicals that accelerate aging and cause disease. After being absorbed through the intestines, lipoic acid enters cells and exhibits both lipid and water solubility.
Lipoic acid, as a coenzyme, plays a crucial role in two key oxidative decarboxylation reactions: the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex and the α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex, catalyzing the formation and transfer of acyl groups. Lipoic acid can accept an acyl group from the acetyl group of pyruvate to form a thioester bond, then transfer the acetyl group to the sulfur atom of the coenzyme A molecule. The resulting dihydrolipoamide can be further oxidized by dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (requiring NAD+) to regenerate oxidized lipoamide.
α-Lipoic acid contains a disulfide five-membered ring structure with a high electron density, exhibiting significant electrophilicity and a strong ability to react with free radicals. Therefore, it possesses antioxidant properties and high health benefits and medicinal value (such as its effects on combating fatty liver and lowering plasma cholesterol).
Furthermore, the sulfhydryl group of lipoic acid readily undergoes redox reactions, thus protecting sulfhydryl enzymes from the toxicity of heavy metal ions. Lipoic acid is widely distributed in nature, particularly abundant in liver and yeast cells. In food, lipoic acid often co-occurs with vitamin B1. The human body can synthesize it. No deficiency of alpha-lipoic acid has been found in humans.

Uses of α-Lipoic Acid.
Antioxidants and as coenzymes of e.g. pyruvatedehydrogenase and glycine decarboxylase, exogenous lipoic acid is reduced by two or more enzymes within the cell.
