Prednisolone Powder Usage and Synthesis.

Prednisolone is also known as hydroprednisone, chloroprednisone, prednisolone, dehydrohydrocortisone, Pepcid, prednisolone acetate, acetate is a white or almost white crystalline powder, odourless, bitter taste.

Almost insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol or chloroform. It is an adrenal glucocorticoid and corticosteroid drug, and is a medium-acting glucocorticoid.

Its efficacy is comparable with prednisone, its anti-inflammatory effect is stronger, the water salt metabolism is very weak. This product is a hydroxyl compound (hydroxyl in the 11 position), local application of the efficacy of better, such as dermatological and ophthalmological diseases, because it is directly effective in the local area, but also for patients with hepatic insufficiency.

Oral absorption is rapid and complete, reaching peak blood concentration in 1 hour, with a plasma protein binding rate of 90% to 95% and a half-life of about 200 minutes. It can enter the foetal circulation, and the amount of the drug appearing in breast milk is 0.07%～0.23%. It is metabolised by the liver and excreted mainly from the kidneys, with more than 20% of the drug in its original form.

Uses and functions of Prednisolone.

For rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic fever, lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, multiple myeloma, etc. The dosage depends on the size of the joints, and it should be operated under aseptic conditions to prevent infection.

Prednisolone is mainly used in allergic and inflammatory diseases. Because of its weak sodium retention effect, it is generally not used in the replacement therapy of hypoadrenocorticism.

It should be avoided in patients with hyperadrenocorticism, hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, psychosis, epilepsy, post-surgical patients, and in patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers, intestinal disorders or chronic malnutrition.

Do not use this class of drugs for general infections. Acute infection poisoning, must be applied in conjunction with a sufficient amount of effective antibacterial drugs, for severe tuberculosis should be combined with a sufficient amount of anti-tuberculosis drugs, and according to the condition, timely reduction and discontinuation.

Undesirable effect of Prednisolone.

When applied in large quantities or for a long period of time, it may cause obesity, hirsutism, acne, elevated blood sugar, hypertension, increased intraocular pressure, sodium and water retention, oedema, decreased blood potassium, mental excitement, gastric and duodenal ulcers or even haemorrhage and perforation, osteoporosis, decalcification, pathological fracture, and poor wound healing.

When injected or applied locally, it can sometimes cause joint damage, local necrosis, skin atrophy, etc.
