Synthesis method of Menthol powder.

CSA was added to a stirred solution of MOM-labelled amyl lactone in THF/MeOH at room temperature.The reaction mixture was stirred for 11 h at room temperature.

Saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution was carefully added and the reaction mixture was cooled to 0 °C. The reaction mixture was diluted with ether (10 mL) and the organic layer was separated from the crude mixture. The organic layer was dried, removed under vacuum and then purified by fast chromatography (2:1 hexane/EtOAc) to give amyl lactone as a white solid. This was obtained using the general procedure of MOM deprotection under Bransted acid conditions.

Using the protected alcohol, the target compound DL-menthol was obtained in white solid form after purification by column chromatography (4:1 hexane/EtOAc).
