Pharmacological effect of Passion Fruit Extract.

1. Anti-cancer activity: The stem and leaf extracts of Passiflora tetragonoloba have cytotoxic effects on mouse leukaemia P388 cells, but the 4-hydroxy-2-cyclopentenone contained therein also shows cytotoxic effects on the host mammalian cells (BSC).

2. Anxiolytic and sedative effects: After dissolving the dry extract of ethanol in water, the supernatant was injected intraperitoneally into rats, and it was found that the aqueous extract could reduce phenylisopropylamine-induced hyperexcitability and prolong barbiturate-induced sleep when the dose was 150mgkg-1; and it had analgesic effects when the dose was 75-150mgkg-1.
