This protein has a high proportion of hydrophobic amino acids, such as glycine and proline, which form mobile hydrophobic structural domains.ELN is located on chromosome 7 of the human genome.

Selective splicing of the ELN gene results in the formation of at least 11 proelastin isoforms in humans.

Elastin is initially synthesised as a water-soluble monomer with a molecular weight of 70,000 and is called protoelastin (tropoelastin), which is partially hydroxylated from proline to produce hydroxyproline during modification.

After protoelastin is secreted from the cell, some of the lysine is oxidised by oxidase-catalysed oxidation to an aldehyde group and condensed with the ε-amino group of another lysine to form a pyridine derivative called streptavidin.
