Piperine is a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant, with good antagonistic effects on experimental electroconvulsions in mice, and with varying degrees of antagonistic effects on convulsive seizures and audiogenic seizures induced by pentylenetetrazol, indohexadine toxin, strychnine, and intracerebroventricular injections of cylinder arrow toxins, glutamate, and so on.
Clinical trials have also shown efficacy in certain types of epilepsy. There is a folk recipe for epilepsy "white pepper and radish", and a simplified structure of piperine analogue 3-(3,4-dimethyl-dioxyphenyl)acryloylpiperidine (trade name anti-epileptic) was artificially synthesised. Piperine is more toxic to flies than pyrethrum.
Characteristic of Piperine.
An alkaloid with the molecular formula C17H19NO3.
It exists in a variety of pepper plant fruits, for its pungent flavour component, but the pungent taste of pepper mainly from its isomer Jiamicine. In the commercial black pepper and white pepper, piperine content of 5% to 9%, sometimes up to 11%.
Piperine is colourless monoclinic prismatic crystals; melting point 130-133 ℃; soluble in acetic acid, benzene, ethanol and chloroform, slightly soluble in ether, almost insoluble in water and petroleum ether; the entrance is initially tasteless, after a pungent taste; can be generated with a strong acid crystalline salt.
