Hydroxycitric acid ((-)-HCA) is an important organic acid. It is a derivative of citric acid and is contained in many natural hibiscus plants. Its molecular formula is C6H8O8. Citrate lyase catalyzes the cleavage of citrate into oxaloacetate and acetyl-CoA outside mitochondria. Citrate lyase is widely distributed in animal tissues and is believed to play a role in the conversion of carbohydrates to fat and gluconeogenesis.
(-)-HCA can inhibit the cleavage of citrate into oxaloacetate and acetyl-CoA outside mitochondria by inhibiting the activity of citrate lyase, among which acetyl-CoA is a molecule that plays a key role in the process of energy storage as fat.

This synthesis method uses citric acid as raw material, dehydrates to produce aconitic acid, and then oxidizes aconitic acid to produce hydroxycitric acid.
The optimized processes of aconitic acid and hydroxycitric acid were studied respectively. The optimized process conditions of aconitic acid are 1 mol of hydroxycitric acid with 270 mol of 56% sulfuric acid, reacted at 140℃ for 7h, and the obtained aconitic acid was decomposed with a melting point of 186℃; the waste acid and undecomposed citric acid were recycled, and the citric acid recovery rate reached 28%, and the concentrated sulfuric acid recovery rate reached 65%.
The optimized process conditions of hydroxycitric acid are hydroxycitric acid obtained with a ratio of n-oxidant to n-aconitic acid of 2:1, a reaction time of 16h, and a reaction temperature of 50℃, with a product yield of about 80%.
