Uses and functions of Tocotrienols Powder
Vitamin E (tocopherol) is important for a wide variety of animals at different stages of growth, where it is essential for the optimal functioning of reproductive, muscular, nervous and immune systems. The vitamin commonly referred to as α-tocopherol has been the focus of vitamin research because it is the most active, the most widely distributed and the most representative.
However, recent studies have revealed that tocotrienols have superior functions to α-tocopherol in some cases, such as antioxidant, anticancer and cholesterol-lowering properties [1, 2].
These special functions of tocotrienols are related to their own structure, because tocotrienols contain unsaturated side chains, so they can penetrate more effectively into tissues containing saturated fatty acid layers, such as the brain and liver, but also can be more easily distributed in the lipid layer of the cell membrane, which can play a very good antioxidant and scavenging free radicals efficacy [3].
Pharmacological Effects of Tocotrienols Raw Material
Vitamin E, also known as tocopherol, is a general term for a class of biologically active phenolic compounds with similar chemical structures. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin with the chemical structure of a benzopyran derivative, including tocopherols and tocotrienols.
The main structures of both tocopherols and tocotrienols are a hydroquinone group plus an isoprenoid side chain, with the main difference between the two being that the side chain of tocopherols is a saturated fatty acid, whereas the latter's side chain is an unsaturated fatty acid containing three double bonds located at the 3', 7', and 11' positions, respectively ( Figure1) [4,5]. Tocopherols are mainly found in corn oil, soybean oil and olive oil, while tocotrienols are enriched within palm oil, rice bran oil and barley oil.
There are eight known vitamins in nature, which are the four i.e. α, β, γ, and δ isomers of the two classes of vitamins, which are mainly classified according to the position and number of methyl substituents located on the benzo monohydropyran (Figure 1)
Production method of Tocotrienols Powder
Despite the great structural similarity between tocopherols and tocotrienols, there are significant differences in certain biological functions.
With continued research, it has been found that tocotrienols have superior physiological functions over tocopherols in many reaction systems.
