Alcoholic extracts of Fructus Chickweed can inhibit Fe2++ ascorbic acid-induced MDA production in rat heart, liver and kidney, inhibit yeast polysaccharide A to stimulate neutral leukocytes to generate superoxide anion radicals (O-2), and inhibit H2O2-induced oxidative haemolysis of erythrocytes, which indicated that alcoholic extracts of Fructus Chickweed play an antioxidant role by scavenging -OH, O-2, and H2O2.

Chickweed vine extract had a strong effect on herpes simplex virus with 50% cytopathic inhibitory concentration (CPIE50), 50% cell lethal concentration (CLE50) and 50% enzyme activity inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 46.0, 630 and 0.2 g/ml, respectively, and a selective toxicity index (ST) of 13.7.

The polyamide column chromatography component of the aqueous extract of Chickweed Vine had an extremely potent inhibitory effect on HIV-RT (HIV reverse transcriptase) activity, which was stronger than that of the positive control, 3′-azido-3′-deoxythymidine phosphoric acid triglyceride (AZTTP). At a concentration of 2g/ml, it completely inhibited HIV-RT activity.
