    Method 1: A two-step oxidation, i.e. alkaline and weakly acidic, is carried out on balsamol, and the oxidising agent may be potassium permanganate, ozone or a sulphuric acid solution of sodium (or potassium) dichromate, after which the oxides are saponified, dehydrated, and lactonised to produce norepineolide.

    The lactone is then reduced to norethindrone diol with lithium aluminium hydride in ether (or with borane in tetrahydrofuran).

    With D - camphor - β - sulfonic acid as a cyclic agent, dehydrogenation of diol, and then dehydrated under the action of aluminium trioxide, can be produced norepineol ether.     Method 2: The synthetic route with diol 2 as the intermediate was the first artificial synthesis of norephedrine ether from (-)-perillyl alcohol 3 originating from the extract of Perilla frutescens, with an overall yield of 52%. The balsamol 3 was oxidised with chromium trioxide and degraded to the lactone 4, which was reduced by lithium tetrahydroaluminium to obtain the diol 2; the diol compound 2 was activated by p-toluenesulphonyl chloride, and then subjected to intramolecular cycloaddition under the action of alkali sodium hydride to obtain the nigrosalpinum 1.

    The disadvantage of this route is the need to use chromium trioxide as an oxidant, will generate a large number of seriously polluted chromium-containing wastewater, and the need to use the more dangerous lithium tetrahydroaluminium and sodium hydride, etc.

    The synthetic descending ether is made from perillyl alcohol, which is oxidised by KMnO4 in two steps (ozone oxidation in Switzerland and sodium dichromate oxidation in Russia). That is (1) alkaline oxidation; (2) weak acidic oxidation.

    Obtain the oxide, and then the oxide saponification, dehydration, lactonisation, then the descending salivary lactone. The lactone is reduced to norepineol with lithium aluminium hydride in ether (or with borane in tetrahydrofuran).

    Use D-camphor-β-sulfonic acid as cyclisation agent, cyclise the diol, that is, get norepinephrine ether (foreign cyclisation agents include sulphuric acid, p-toluenesulphonic acid and β-naphthalenesulphonic acid, etc.). The total yield of the whole process is 35%.
