    Ferrocene Powder Usage and Synthesis.

    Ferrocene is an organic transition metal compound with aromatic properties, also called dicyclopentadienyl iron and dicyclopentadienyl iron, the molecular structure contains a divalent iron cation and two cyclopentadienyl anions, it is the raw material for the production of ferrocene carboxylic acid, it was firstly produced by reacting with cyclopentadienyl magnesium bromide and anhydrous ferric chloride in 50 years of the last century, it is an orange-yellow needle-like crystalline powder with similar odor to camphor at room temperature. It belongs to non-polar compounds, easily soluble in methanol, ethanol, ether, petroleum ether, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, dichloromethane, benzene, toluene, xylene and other organic solvents, it is usually best to dissolve it in toluene due to the greater polarity of ethanol.

    It is insoluble in water, soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid, insoluble in boiling caustic soda solution and hydrochloric acid, and does not decompose. Its molecules show polarity, with high thermal stability, chemical stability and radiation resistance, it has a wide range of applications in industry, agriculture, medicine, aerospace, energy saving, environmental protection and other industries.

    Uses and Function of Ferrocene.

    Ferrocene can be used as additive for rocket fuel, antiknock agent for gasoline, maturing agent for rubber and silicone resin, and ultraviolet absorber. The vinyl derivatives of ferrocene can be polymerized by alkene bonding to obtain metal-containing polymers with carbon chain skeleton, which can be used as the outer coating of spacecraft.

    Ferrocene's smoky combustion effect is found earlier, no matter it is added in solid fuel, liquid fuel or gas fuel, can play this effect, especially for the hydrocarbons that produce big smoke during combustion, its effect is more significant.

    Its addition in gasoline has a very good anti-shock effect, but due to the deposition of iron oxide to the spark plug to affect the ignition and limited, for this reason, some people also use the discharge of iron mixtures in order to reduce the phenomenon of iron deposition. Ferrocene added in kerosene or diesel fuel, because the engine does not use the ignition device, so the adverse effects of less, in addition to the combustion of smoke to help combustion, it also has to promote carbon monoxide more carbon dioxide role.

    Used as catalyst and gasoline anti-detonation additive as energy-saving anti-smoke and combustion additive: it can be used in all kinds of fuels, such as diesel, gasoline, heavy oil, coal and so on. Adding 0.1% ferrocene to automobile diesel fuel can save fuel oil by 10-14%, increase the rate by 10-13%, and reduce the smoke level in the exhaust gas by 30-80‰.

    In addition, adding 0.3 ‰ in heavy oil, coal added 0.2% of ferrocene, can make the fuel consumption decline, at the same time, the smoke decreased by 30%; ferrocene added to gasoline can also improve the octane value of gasoline, improve the fuel's resistance to combustion performance of the explosion shock.

    Characteristic of Ferrocene.

    Orange-yellow needle-like crystals. Melting point 172.5-173℃, sublimation above 100℃, boiling point 249℃. Soluble in dilute nitric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, benzene, ethyl ether, petroleum ether and tetrahydrofuran, in dilute nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid to produce a deep red solution with blue fluorescence.

    It does not melt in water, 10% sodium hydroxide and hot concentrated hydrochloric acid, in the boiling solution of these solvents, ferrocene neither dissolves nor decomposes, it can be volatilized with water vapor, it has camphor-like odor, it is stable in air, it has strong absorption of ultraviolet rays, it is quite stable to heat, and it can withstand high temperature heating at 470℃.

    Product Methods of  Bulk Ferrocene Powder.

    It is obtained by heating iron powder and cyclopentadiene in nitrogen atmosphere at 300℃, or by reacting anhydrous ferrous chloride with sodium cyclopentadiene in tetrahydrofuran, or by electrolytic synthesis method, the synthesis of ferrocene by using cyclopentadiene, ferrous chloride, and diethylamine as the raw materials can be operated according to the following method.

    Under stirring, anhydrous ferric chloride (FeCL3) is put into tetrahydrofuran in several times, and then iron powder is added, and heated under nitrogen protection and reflux for 4.5h to get ferrous chloride solution.

    The solvent tetrahydrofuran was evaporated under reduced pressure to give a nearly dry residue. Cooled in an ice bath, add a mixture of cyclopentadiene and diethylamine, stirring vigorously at room temperature for 6-8h, evaporate the excess amine under reduced pressure, and the residue was extracted by refluxing with petroleum ether.

    The extract was filtered while hot, after evaporating the solvent, the crude ferrocene was obtained. Recrystallized with pentane or cyclohexane, or sublimation method to put forward the purity, that is, the refined product yield 73-84%.
