Application/Function of Calcium Alginate Powder.
Calcium alginate has three main functions as follows:
(1) Calcium alginate sponge: Calcium alginate is mainly used to produce calcium alginate sponge, which can be used to stop bleeding from skin injury and traumatic bleeding. After the calcium alginate sponge is applied to the wound, it exchanges with the sodium and calcium ions in the exudate and blood of the wound, releasing calcium ions and forming a thin layer of gel on the surface of the wound. Due to the release of calcium ions, the formation of blood clots in the capillary ends is accelerated, thus achieving rapid hemostasis. Due to the formation of the gel layer on the surface of the wound, it plays a certain protective role for the wound, and keeps the wound surface at a certain humidity and temperature, creating a good microenvironment for the healing of the wound and promoting the early healing of the wound.
(2) Stabilizer and gelling agent: The ability and strength of sodium alginate to form gel is related to Ca2+. It interacts with calcium ions in cow's milk to form calcium alginate thus causing a series of complex reactions in milk proteins. Calcium alginate can maintain the morphology of ice cream well, especially for long-term preservation, and is very effective in preventing shrinkage and tissue grittiness. It has a synergistic effect with Ca2+ and pectin.
(3) Brewer's yeast immobilization fermentation: Brewer's yeast is put into sodium alginate solution dissolved with wort, and then dropped into calcium chloride solution dissolved with wort to form calcium alginate particles containing yeast cells, which immobilize yeast cells.
Calcium Alginate Powder is mainly used as a raw material for salts such as sodium alginate and as a drug for the manufacture of gastrological equivalents. It is also used as an excipient, binder and stabilizer for tablets. It is often used as a thickening agent and emulsifier in food and cosmetics.
