Dimethyl sulfoxide Usage and Synthesis.
Dimethyl sulfoxide is widely used as a solvent and reaction reagent, especially in acrylonitrile polymerisation as a processing solvent and extraction solvent, as a solvent for polyurethane synthesis and extraction, as a solvent for the synthesis of polyamides, polyimides and polysulfone resins, as well as aromatic hydrocarbons, solvent for the extraction of butadiene, and solvent for the synthesis of chlorofluorobenzenephenylamine, and so on.
In addition, in the pharmaceutical industry, dimethyl sulfoxide is also directly used as a raw material and carrier for some drugs. Dimethyl sulfoxide itself has anti-inflammatory pain, diuretic, sedative and other effects, also known as the ‘cure-all’, often as the active component of pain medication added to the drug. This product has a high selective extraction capacity, used as acrylic resin and polysulfone ester polymerisation and condensation solvent, polyacrylonitrile and acetic acid fibre polymerisation extraction solvent, alkanes and aromatics separation of extraction solvent, used for aromatic hydrocarbons, butadiene extraction, acrylic spinning, plastics solvents and organic synthesis of dyes, pharmaceuticals and other industrial reaction medium.
In medicine, Dimethyl Sulfoxide has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, the skin has a strong penetration, and thus can dissolve certain drugs, so that such drugs to the human body penetration to achieve therapeutic purposes. Dimethyl sulfoxide is generally obtained by oxidation of dimethyl sulfide, due to the different oxidants used and oxidation, and thus different production processes.
1. Methanol carbon disulfide method methanol and carbon disulfide as raw materials, with γ-Al2O3 as catalyst, the first synthesis of dimethyl sulfide, and then oxidised with nitrogen dioxide (or nitric acid) to dimethyl sulfoxide.
2. Hydrogen peroxide method to acetone as a buffer medium, so that dimethyl sulfide and hydrogen peroxide reaction. The production of dimethyl sulfoxide with this method is more expensive, not suitable for large-scale production.
3. Nitrogen dioxide method with methanol and hydrogen sulfide in the role of γ-alumina to generate dimethyl sulfide; sulfuric acid and sodium nitrite reaction to generate nitrogen dioxide; dimethyl sulfide and nitrogen dioxide in the gas-liquid oxidation at 60-80 ℃ for the generation of crude dimethyl sulfoxide, but also directly oxidized with oxygen, the same generation of crude dimethyl sulfoxide, and then distillation under reduced pressure, refined dimethyl sulfoxide finished products. This method is more advanced production methods.
4. Dimethyl sulfate method with dimethyl sulfate and sodium sulfide reaction to produce dimethyl sulfide; sulfuric acid and sodium nitrite reaction to generate nitrogen dioxide; dimethyl sulfide and nitrogen dioxide oxidation of crude dimethyl sulfoxide, and then after neutralisation, distillation of refined dimethyl sulfoxide. In addition, dimethyl sulphoxide is produced from dimethyl sulphide by anodic oxidation.
