Fluoxetine hydrochloride is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) for the treatment of a variety of depressive mental disorders, including minor or major depression, bipolar affective disorder depression, psychogenic depression, and depressive neurosis. The mechanism of action is to inhibit the uptake of serotonin by neurons from the synaptic gap, increasing the availability of this neurotransmitter in the gap, thereby improving emotional states and treating depressive mental disorders.
