Catalysts are prepared by dehydration of aluminum hydroxide, direct thermal decomposition of aluminum salts or oxidation of aluminum. α-Al2O3 has little specific surface area and almost no catalytic activity. γ-Al2O3, η-Al2O3 larger than the surface, high porosity, strong heat resistance, good formability, with strong surface acid and certain surface alkaline, are widely used as catalysts and carriers. Alumina has high catalytic activity for various dehydration reactions, including olefin skeleton isomerization, olefin polymerization, H2-D2 exchange, hydrogenation and dehydrogenation. As an alkaline catalyst, it has high catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of carbon oxysulfide and carbon disulfide. Alumina is one of the most used, the largest amount of carrier, can be made into balls, pieces, strips, trilobes, honeycomb, microspheres and other types and sizes of particles. As the carrier loaded active component, and can interact with it to improve the catalytic activity and selectivity. Catalysts can also be prepared by co-precipitation and mixing with active components. Although α-Al2O3 without catalytic activity has small specific surface area and small load capacity, it has good thermal stability and can be used as the carrier of hydrocarbon gas phase oxidation catalyst and precious metal catalyst. Activated alumina can be obtained through specific low temperature dehydration. It is a porous substance with small density, large surface area (up to hundreds of square meters per gram of surface area) and large porosity, so it can absorb water vapor and a variety of gas and liquid molecules. Commonly used as catalyst, catalyst carrier and adsorbent. It is one of the most widely used catalyst carriers, the amount of which accounts for about 70% of the supported catalysts in industry. Also commonly used as a desiccant, its drying capacity is no less than phosphorus pentoxide.
