Platycodin powder Usage and Synthesis.

Platycodonopsis saponins are total saponins extracted from Platycodon grandiflorum, which is the main active ingredient of Platycodonopsis. It has strong haemolytic effect and local irritation, and has analgesic, antipyretic and antitussive effects on animals.

In addition, Platycodonis saponins also reduce the content of cholesterol in the liver of rats, increase the excretion of steroids and bile acids, anti-acetylcholine and antihistamine and other effects.

Uses of Platycodin powder.

It has strong haemolytic effect and local irritation, and has analgesic, antipyretic and antitussive effects on animals.

Platycodonopsis saponins have central inhibitory effects such as anti-inflammatory, sedative, analgesic and antipyretic, and have vasodilatory, antihypertensive and antiulcer effects. Platycodon grandiflorum skin also has expectorant effect.

However, it should be noted that, Platycodonis saponins have haemolytic effect, can not be used for injection, oral hydrolysis in the digestive tract destruction, that is, no haemolytic effect.

Pharmacological Effect of Platycodin powder.

1. Expectorant and antitussive effect

The expectorant effect of Platycodonis saponins is stronger than that of Farfarb, and second to that of American Farfarb.

When taken orally, it causes some degree of stimulation to the mucous membrane of pharynx and gastric mucous membrane, and reflexively causes hypersecretion of mucous membrane of respiratory tract, which dilutes the phlegm and prompts it to be discharged. Crude Platycodonopsis saponins have an analgesic effect. Guinea pig intraperitoneal injection of cough ED50 for 6.4mg/kg.

2. Anti-inflammatory effect

Crude Platycodonopsis saponins have anti-inflammatory effect. Infusion of 1/10 ~ 1/5 LD50 dose, the rat hind limb keratan gum foot swelling and acetic acid swelling have anti-inflammatory effect. A dosage of less than 10 LD50 administered continuously once daily was also effective in rat adjuvant arthritis.

This preparation also reduced capillary permeability in mice with allergic reactions. The torsion reaction and abdominal exudation induced by intraperitoneal injection of Platycodonis saponins in mice was inhibited by infusion of the same saponins.

3. Effects on circulatory system

Rats with crude Platycodonis saponins static injection, can be seen in the temporary drop in blood pressure, heart rate slowing and respiratory depression. On the isolated guinea pig ear, high concentrations of negative inotropic effect.

Anaesthetised dogs arterial injection of 200~280mg crude Platycodonopsis saponins can reduce the resistance of coronary arteries and hind limb vessels, increase blood flow, the intensity of which can be compared with poppy alkaloids.

Coronary and hindlimb blood flow was also increased when 4mg/kg was injected statically, accompanied by temporary hypotension. This vasodilation is thought to be a direct effect on the peripheral vasculature

4.Other effects

Crude Platycodonopsis saponins have sedative, analgesic and antipyretic effects. Can inhibit spontaneous activity in mice, prolong the sleep time of sodium cycloheximide.

However, there is no protective effect on electric shock and pentylenetetrazol convulsions. Platycodonopsis saponins can reduce the content of cholesterol in the liver of rats, increase the excretion of steroids and bile acids.

There are also anti-acetylcholine and antihistamine effect, can inhibit acetylcholine and histamine-induced contraction of isolated guinea pig ileum.
