    In addition, tretinoin can be used as a contraceptive agent with an EC50 for contraceptive effect of 0.1 mg/kg, which is much lower than its minimum effective dose (MED) of 0.8 mg/kg and lethal dose (LD50) of 300 mg/kg.

    The target of tretinoin is Junction plakoglobin (JUP), and the new mechanism of its contraceptive effect may be to inhibit the expression of JUP, resulting in the disruption of intercellular junctions, thus preventing spermatogenesis. In addition to this, tretinoin lactone has antifertility, antitumour and antibacterial effects, and is widely used in the treatment of many diseases.
