Guanidine sulfate is a guanidine salt along with guanidine hydrochloride, guanidine carbonate, guanidine nitrate, and guanidine phosphate; guanidine is a strong base, and free guanidine is very reactive and often exists as a salt. Guanidine sulfate is white crystals easily soluble in water and is mainly used in organic synthesis and pharmaceutical industry. Guanidine, also known as iminourea, is a compound formed when the oxygen in the urea molecule is replaced by an imino group (=NH) with the chemical formula: H2N(C=NH)NH2.

It is usually produced by co-heating cyanamide and excess ammonia or ammonium chloride in ethanol, strongly alkaline, easily hydrolyzed, unstable under alkaline conditions, absorbing water and CO2 in the air to form guanidine carbonate, hydrolyzed to urea.
