Benzyl Alcohol Usage and Synthesis.

Benzyl alcohol is used as a preservative in ointments, a desiccant for fibres, nylon filaments and plastic films, a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride, a photographic developer, a solvent for acetate, inks, paints, lacquers, epoxy coatings, dyes, casein, wormwood and gelatine, and an intermediate in the manufacture of benzyl esters or ethers.

It is also used in the preparation of fragrances and flavourings (mostly benzyl alcohol esters of fatty acids) for use as additives in soaps, perfumes, cosmetics and other products. Used as an identifier of quartz and wool fibres as it has almost the same refractive index as quartz and wool fibres. Used as a flavouring agent and diluent in the fragrance industry.

Uses of Benzyl Alcohol.

Benzyl Alcohol is an extremely useful fragrance fixative, and is an indispensable fragrance in the formulation of jasmine, moonflower, and ylang ylang fragrances. Used in the preparation of soap, daily make-up flavour. However, benzyl alcohol can be slowly oxidised naturally, part of the generation of benzaldehyde and benzyl ether, so that commercially available products are often with almond flavour, so it is not suitable for long-term storage. Benzyl alcohol is widely used in the production of industrial chemicals. Used as paint solvent, photographic developer, PVC stabiliser, medicine, synthetic resin solvent, vitamin B injection solvent, ointment or liquid preservative.

Can be used as nylon silk, fibre and plastic film desiccant, dyes, cellulose esters, casein solvents, the preparation of benzyl esters or ether intermediates. Meanwhile, it is widely used in pen making (biros oil), paint solvent and so on.

Exists in many fragrant flower essential oil, so can be used as and the agent and benzyl acetate for jasmine, gardenia, lilac, ylang ylang, tuberose, hyacinth, acacia and other flowers in the type of aroma, and also has the role of fixed fragrance. Also often as solvent, dissolve artificial musk and other spices, also often as edible spices, used in cherry, grape, honey, sweet orange, hanging hooks, walnut, fragrant pod orchid bean and other edible flavour essence.

It is obtained by taking benzyl chloride as raw material and hydrolysed by heating under the catalytic effect of alkali. Specification of spice grade benzyl alcohol (QB792-81): relative density 1.041-1.046, refractive index 1.538-1.541, boiling range 203-206 ℃ distillation in more than 95%, solubility is fully dissolved in 30 times the volume of distilled water, alcohol content ≥ 98%, chlorine-containing test (N.F.) as a side reaction. Raw material consumption quota: benzyl chloride 1600kg/t, soda ash 1000kg/t.
