Testosterone propionate has the effect of promoting the formation of male sex organs and the development and maintenance of secondary sexual characteristics: it also has the effect of anabolic, promoting the fusion of long epiphyses and stimulating erythrocyte proliferation; it is clinically used in the replacement therapy of testicular and pituitary hypoplasia, and is also used in the treatment of functional uterine bleeding, women's menopausal syndromes, advanced breast cancer, aplastic anaemia and anaemia of other causes.

Testosterone propionate is used to treat breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine fibroids, multiple myeloma and kidney cancer.
Pharmacological Effect of Testosterone Propionate.
Testosterone propionate, also known as testosterone propionate, testosterone propionate, is white crystal or off-white crystalline powder at room temperature, odourless.
Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol or ether, slightly soluble in vegetable oil, very soluble in chloroform.
Pharmacological effect is similar to methyltestosterone, but the effect is slightly stronger than the latter. Because oral easy to be destroyed by the liver, so oral ineffective.
Often intramuscular injection of its oil solution, slow absorption, strong and long-lasting effect, can be maintained for several days. Testosterone propionate can promote the development of male organs and secondary sexual characteristics, promote protein synthesis and bone formation, fight against estrogen, inhibit the growth of endometrium and ovarian and pituitary functions.
It is used for azoospermia, cryptorchidism, male hypogonadism, gynaecological diseases such as excessive menstruation, uterine fibroids, senile osteoporosis and aplastic anaemia.
It is converted into 5α-dihydrotestosterone (5α-dihyrotesterone) in the body first, and then binds with cell receptors and enters into the cell nucleus, interacts with chromatin, activates RNA polymerase, and promotes protein synthesis and cell metabolism.
In addition, testosterone propionate stimulates erythropoiesis and differentiation via erythropoietin.
Although testosterone propionate can be absorbed orally, it will be rapidly destroyed and become ineffective in the liver, so it is usually injected intramuscularly. After intramuscular injection of testosterone propionate, it is absorbed slowly, and its prolonged effect is 2 to 4 days. In the blood, 98% of testosterone is bound to sex hormone globulin and only 2% is free.
The half-life is 10-20 min. After inactivation of testosterone in the liver, the metabolites are androstenedione, isoandrosterone and protocholanolone. They are 90% excreted in the urine in the form of bound glucuronic acid and sulphuric acid.
About 6 per cent of the unconjugated form is excreted in the bile, a small proportion of which can still be reabsorbed to form the enterohepatic circulation.
