Ritonavir alone or in combination with antiretroviral nucleosides can be used to treat human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) infection in adults and children 2 years of age and older.

Ritonavir is an AIDS (HIV) protease inhibitor that inhibits the HIV protease so that the enzyme cannot process polymeric proteins and thus cannot produce mature HIV particles, slowing the spread of HIV between cells. Prevent the development of new infections and slow the progression of HIV.

Ritonavir is a CYP3A inhibitor that increases the blood concentration of drugs that can be metabolized by CYP3A. Commonly used as a synergist for CYP3A metabolized HIV-1 protease inhibitors to increase the blood concentration of co-used HIV-1 protease inhibitors.

Pharmacological action of Ritonavir.

Ritonavir is an inhibitor of HIV-1 and HIV-2 proteases. Inhibition of the HIV protease prevents the enzyme from processing and synthesizing gag-pol polymeric protein precursors, resulting in non-infectious immature HIV virus particles. This product is generally effective in both dovudine-sensitive and zidovudine and saquinavir resistant HIV strains.
