Sodium 3-hydroxybutyrate is widely present in nature, human blood and urine. It exhibits optical activity and can be crystallized in pure state. The hydroxyl group can associate, is easily soluble in water, ethanol, ether, and is easily decomposed by dry steam.
Due to the presence of the polar group OH, its acidity is enhanced, and it is easy to undergo esterification reaction with alcohol or acid. The polymer of sodium 3-hydroxybutyrate can be decomposed by microorganisms in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, so it can be used in biodegradable plastics, but there is currently no large-scale industrial production.
Uses of Beta-hydroxybutyrate.
