    Calcium Propionate Usage and Synthesis.

    Used as a preservative for bread, pastry and cheese and as an anti-mould agent for feed. As food preservatives, propionate salts and calcium propionate are mainly used in bread because sodium propionate raises the ph value of bread and delays the fermentation of raw pasta; sodium propionate is mostly used in confectionery because synthetic bulking agents are used for the puffing of confectionery, and there is no problem with the development of yeast caused by a rise in pH value.

    When used as a feed preservative, sodium propionate is better than calcium propionate. However, calcium propionate is more stable than sodium propionate. Propionate in food in addition to bread, pastry, cheese, etc., can also be used for soy sauce mould, inhibit re-fermentation effect.

    In medicine, propionate can be made into powder, solution and ointment to treat diseases caused by parasitic moulds on skin. The ointment (liquid) contains 12.3 per cent sodium propionate, and the bulk contains 15 per cent calcium propionate.

    Uses of Calcium Propionate.

    Calcium acid liquid wet acid type preservative, its bacteriostatic effect is affected by the environmental PH. In PH5.0 when the minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.01%, PH6.5 when 0.5%. It has strong inhibitory effect on various moulds, aerobic bacillus or gram-negative bacillus in acidic medium. It is effective in preventing the production of aflatoxin, but almost ineffective against yeast. In addition, it is also used as a food preservative.

    Preparation method of Calcium Propionate.

    First of all, the raw material calcium carbonate made of water suspension, the water should be refined and purified to remove impurities such as heavy metals and magnesium. CaCO3 water suspension quantitatively into the neutralisation reactor, maintain the kettle temperature of 60 ~ 80 ℃, stirring while adding propionic acid, neutralisation reaction lasted 2 ~ 3 hours, at this time there is a large amount of CO2 gas escapes, can be discharged through the condenser vent pipe.

    By adjusting the external heating temperature, adding acid and stirring speed to achieve the best reaction conditions, the end point of the reaction pH value should be controlled at 7 ~ 8, the reaction is reversible, the CO2 gas should be discharged in time to better control the end point of the reaction.

    The neutralised aqueous solution is vacuum filtered, and the filtrate is concentrated in the evaporation kettle, and then put into the crystallisation tank and slowly cooled and crystallised under normal temperature and pressure. The mother liquor can be returned to the evaporation kettle set 2-3 times and then discarded. The separated solid is dried into small particles and crushed, measured and packaged to obtain the finished product of calcium propionate.
