Shikimic acid powder:High-Purity Ingredient for Immune Support

Product Overview:
Shikimic acid is a white crystalline powder easily soluble in water. It gets its name because it was first isolated from Japanese shikimi and is an important metabolic product of plants and microorganisms. For a long time, shikimic acid is mainly extracted from the dried and ripe fruits of the aniseed family or Japanese shikimic (Japanese anise), and in recent years, there are also reports of extracting shikimic acid from the fruits of North American maple and pine needles.

Product Details
Shikimic acid of Usage and Synthesis.
Shikimic acid is a key ingredient in Roche's Tamiflu production. The shikimic acid currently used by Roche is extracted from star anise processing. The process of synthesis of shikimic acid from petrochemical raw materials is complicated, and there is no value of production and application except scientific research at present. Shikimic acid can be synthesized from quinic acid, another natural product, in a few steps. Quinic acid is derived from the bark of the cinchonatree tree and can be extracted and supplied in large quantities like shikimic acid.
Uses of Shikimic acid.
Shikimic acid is a key precursor in the synthesis of many alkaloids, aromatic amino acids, indole derivatives, and chiral drugs. More recently, shikimic acid has been used as A starting material for oseltamivir (the active ingredient of Tamiflu), a neuraminidase inhibitor that can be used to treat and prevent influenza A and influenza B. It is an antitumor drug, and also a synthetic raw material for antitumor drugs such as dioxamycin and glyoxalase inhibitors.

Physiological effect of Shikimic acid.
Shikimic acid affects the metabolism of arachidonic acid, inhibits platelet aggregation, inhibits arteriovenous thrombosis and cerebral thrombosis, and has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. It can also be used as an intermediate of antiviral and anticancer drugs, and also has the effect of preventing avian flu drugs "Tamiflu" and "anti-influenza".
The Shikimate Pathway
The shikimate pathway is a metabolic pathway found in bacteria, fungi, algae, parasites, and plants, involved in the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids (phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan).
This pathway is absent in animals, therefore these amino acids are essential amino acids that animals cannot synthesize themselves (although some of these amino acids can be synthesized through alternative pathways; for example, tyrosine is synthesized from phenylalanine in humans, although tyrosine is not an essential amino acid, its source, phenylalanine, is essential, so the intake of essential amino acids is still necessary for its synthesis). Animals must obtain these amino acids from bacteria or plants in their diet (or from animals that eat bacteria or plants).
The seven enzymes involved in the shikimate pathway are DAHP synthase, 3-dehydroquinic acid synthase, 3-dehydroquinic acid dehydratase, shikimate dehydrogenase, shikimate kinase, EPSP synthase, and cladase.

Product method of Bulk Shikimic acid Powder.
Shikimic acid is a monomer compound extracted from star anise.
Extraction Method
A method disclosed in CN102791671B is particularly suitable for isolating shikimic acid from the fruit (seeds and pericarp) of *Illicium verum* (Tibetan star anise). The yield is 12-18% w/w. Shikimic acid can be used as a raw material for the production of oseltamivir (Tamiflu), a drug used to treat avian influenza. Its triacyl derivatives have also been reported to inhibit platelet aggregation and thrombosis by affecting the metabolism of arachidonic acid. Commercially known methods for preparing shikimic acid from the fruit of *Illicium verum* (star anise) and *Liquidambar formosana* (North American sweetgum) yield only 3-7% and 1.5%, respectively. The price of shikimic acid on the international market varies between US$45.00 and US$1000.00 per kilogram depending on demand.
