Biochanin A (BCA) is an oxymethylated isoflavonoid widely found in some edible plants, such as soybean, red clover, alfalfa, peanut and chickpea, etc. Especially, the highest content is found in red clover, but it is only 833mg/100g.
It has an oestrogen-like effect, inhibits the rise of cholesterol, and also has antifungal and antitumour effects. Hormone levels in the body has a two-way regulatory effect. There are also anticancer antispasmodic hypolipidemic effect.
Uses and functions of Biochanin A.
The molecular structure of BCA is similar to that of animal estrogen, and it can competitively bind to estrogen receptor to exert estrogen-like effects. It is an important phytoestrogen, which has various beneficial effects on human and animal health, and it can be used in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, menopausal syndrome and other diseases.

BiochaninA was reported to inhibit protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) of the epidermal growth factor receptor with an IC50 value of 91.5 μM.
BiochaninA inhibited the hydrolysis of 0.5 μM cannabinoids by fatty acid amides (FAAH) in mice, rats, and humans with IC50 values of 1.8, 1.4, and 2.4 μM, respectively.
BiochaninA was able to inhibit the growth of serum- and EGF-stimulated LNCaP and DU-145 cells (IC50 values ranged from 8.0 to 27 μg/ml for serum and 4.3 to 15 μg/ml for EGF), but had no significant effect on the autophosphorylation of EGF receptor tyrosine.
