Bitter Melon P.e. Usage and Synthesis.

Bitter melon extract is the fruit extract of bitter melon, family Hulutaceae, containing bitter melon glycoside (Charantin, isomolecular mixture of β-sitosterol-β-glucoside and 5,25-stigmasterdienol-3-glucoside), also contains niacin, 5-hydroxytryptamine, a variety of vitamins and a variety of amino acids, etc., with hypoglycemic, anticancer, antimicrobial, antiviral, antifertility, immunity-enhancing and other pharmacological activities. The

The hypoglycaemic effect of bitter melon extract has attracted much attention, and it has been intensively studied and widely used in India, China, Japan and other Asian countries.

In medicine, bitter melon extract has begun to be used in the treatment of diabetes and AIDS.

Uses of Bitter Melon P.e.

Clearing heat and removing toxins, improving eyesight. Used for fever, thirst and lead to drink, sunstroke, dysentery, red eye pain, carbuncle and swollen toxin, malignant sores.

Pharmacological Effect of Bitter Melon P.e.

1. Hypoglycaemic effect

To the normal or tetracycline diabetic rabbits after infusion of bitter melon extract, can make the blood glucose significantly lower, subcutaneous injection of anterior pituitary extract caused by hyperglycaemia in rats, infusion of bitter melon pulp juice of the aqueous extract, but also has the effect of lowering blood glucose.

Bitter melon glycosides to rabbits can also reduce blood glucose, its mode of action and toluene transverse butylurea similar and stronger, by stimulating the pancreatic β-cells to release insulin and make blood glucose lower.

For cats with pancreas removed, the hypoglycaemic effect did not disappear completely, so its hypoglycaemic mode of action includes pancreatic and non-pancreatic factors.

2. Antifertility effect

Bitter melon from a polypeptide chain of plant proteins, can inhibit sperm development in male rats, with significant anti-fertility activity, the efficiency of more than 88%.

Bitter melon extracts of α-bitter melon and β-bitter melon can cause early and mid-term abortion in pregnant mice, because α-bitter melon may mainly play a toxic role in the trophoblast cells. β-bitter melon has an inhibitory effect on the biosynthesis of endodermal cells cultured in vitro, the cellular binding rate of 3H-uracil, 3H-thymine and 3H-leucine have decreased significantly, and it is possible that the abortifacient effect of β-bitter melon on early pregnancy is due to its inhibition of the development of male spermatozoa, with an effective rate of 88%. The abortifacient effect of β-bitter melonin on early pregnant rats may be caused by its inhibition of endoderm differentiation.

Bitter melon extract has obvious enhancement effect on the non-specific immune function of mice.

The serum haemagglutinating antibody titre mainly reflects the specific humoral immune function. The original juice of bitter melon and the extract of bitter melon can improve the potency of serum haemagglutinating antibody titre in mice, indicating that bitter melon can promote the humoral immune function of mice.

The ethanol extract of bitter melon has antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Dysentery bacillus, Aspergillus spp, Pneumocystis pneumoniae, Pneumocystis aeruginosa, S. typhi and so on, and it is a drug with a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect.

Preparation method of  Bulk Bitter Melon P.e. Powder.

150kg of fresh bitter melon was washed and deseeded and squeezed the juice into pulp, filtered by squeezing with 20 mesh filter cloth, stood at 0~-5℃ for 12h, siphoned out the supernatant, that is, about 90L of bitter melon extract liquid, stored at 0~-5℃ for spare.

Take 20L of the spare bitter melon extract liquid through the pre-treated and filled 500ml macroporous resin adsorption column, and control the effluent rate to 3L/h to collect the effluent. When the volume of effluent reached 12L, the taste of the effluent was tried every 20 min.

It was found that there was no bitter taste when the effluent volume was about 16L, slightly bitter when the effluent volume was 17L, and obviously bitter when the effluent volume was 18L.

Considering the effects of various conditions, the ratio of the drug solution to the resin in the adsorption process was determined as: drug solution: resin=30:l (v/v), and the speed of effluent was 3L/h.

30L of the spare bitter melon extract was taken and passed through the pretreated and filled 1000ml macroporous resin adsorption column according to the above adsorption conditions, and the effluent was collected, and the whole adsorption process took about 10 h. The effluent was then collected from the column, and then the resin was used as the adsorbent.

The collected effluent was spray-dried to obtain 215g of light yellow powder, which is the bitter melon extract. This powder has no bitter taste and is warm in nature.
