Silymarin extract protects liver cells by blocking the entry of harmful toxins and helping to remove them from the liver cells. Like other bioflavonoids, silymarins are a powerful class of antioxidants.

Silymarin has also been shown to regenerate damaged liver cells. Recent studies have shown that silymarin has the ability to stop fibrosis, a process that occurs in patients with inflammatory liver conditions secondary to diseases such as alcoholism and hepatitis, which may eventually develop into cirrhosis.

The most common use of silymarin extract is generally to neutralise the harmful effects of alcohol on the liver.

Double-blind trials have shown that it can help return the liver to a healthy state in people who quit drinking.

Some trials have suggested that silymarin extract may improve quality of life and even give hepatitis patients hope for a better life. Silymarin may alter the composition of bile, potentially reducing the risk of gallstones. However, this effect still needs to be confirmed in human clinical trials.

When used for liver disease and liver impairment, studies have concluded that 420-600mg of silymarin, standardised from silymarin containing 80% silymarin content, should be taken daily. Based on research and clinical experience, improvement should occur within eight to twelve weeks.
