Pharmacological Effects of Fluvoxamine Maleate Powder.

Fluvoxamine maleate is the only selective 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with a monocyclic structure, which exerts antidepressant effects by selectively inhibiting the reuptake of 5-HT in the presynaptic membrane of the CNS, and increasing the effective concentration of 5-HT in the synaptic gap. It blocks 5-HT reuptake more strongly than fluoxetine, amitriptyline, promethazine, and desipramine, but weaker than paroxetine, sertraline, and propitalopram.

It has little or no effect on dopamine and norepinephrine uptake, and has no affinity for alpha and beta-adrenergic, M-cholinergic, or histamine H1 receptors, and thus has none of the adverse effects that result from binding to these receptors, such as dry mouth, constipation, sedation, extrapyramidal disorders, and upright hypotension.
