    Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) is a carboxymethylated derivative of chitosan, which is highly polar and easily soluble in water, and has been widely used in the fields of pharmaceuticals and biomedical materials development. Since the content of carboxymethyl chitosan in a drug will directly affect its antibacterial and anti-infective clinical effects, accurate quantification of carboxymethyl chitosan is particularly important.

    Uses and Function of Carboxymethyl Chitosan.

    Carboxymethyl chitosan is an important water-soluble chitosan derivative with many medical and industrial applications.

    In medicine, carboxymethyl chitosan can promote wound healing, hemostasis, scarring inhibition, analgesic and antibacterial effects.

    In industry, carboxymethyl chitosan can be used in chemicals, environmental protection and health care products. In addition, Carboxymethyl Chitosan can be used as a pharmaceutical excipient, paired with Ofloxacin to make eye drops, which can prolong the residence period of the drug in the eye, enhance the antibacterial effect, and promote the repair and healing of corneal tissue.

    Carboxymethyl chitosan can also be used as an excipient of coagulation factor drugs for the long-term preventive treatment of leukemia.

    Carboxymethyl Chitosan

    Preparation of Carboxymethyl Chitosan.

    Sodium hydroxide was added to an isopropanol solution of sodium hydroxide at a concentration of 40% in a reaction vial. Chitosan with a deacetylation degree of 15% to 45% was added to the reaction vial, and the mass ratio of chitosan to sodium hydroxide was 1:4.8 after addition.

    The pre-dissolved isopropyl acetone solution of chloroacetic acid was slowly added dropwise to the reaction bottle under stirring, and the reaction continued to be stirred for 3h after addition.

    The mass ratio of chitosan and chloroacetic acid was 5:1. After the reaction was completed, concentrated hydrochloric acid was added to the reacted material to adjust the pH value of the material to be 6-7, filtration was carried out, and the filter cake was washed with anhydrous ethanol for 3 times, and the washed cake was dried under 50°C to obtain the crude carboxymethyl chitosan product.
