Sodium 3-hydroxybutyrate is widely found in nature, human blood and urine. It exhibits optical activity and can be crystallized in its pure state. It is soluble in water, ethanol, ether, and is easily decomposed by dry evaporation.
Due to the existence of polar group OH, its acidity is enhanced, and it is easy to esterify with alcohols or acids. 3-hydroxybutyrate polymer can be decomposed by microorganisms in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, so it can be applied to biodegradable plastics, but there is no large-scale industrial production at present.

As a pharmaceutical intermediate: DL- BATA-hydroxybutyrate sodium can be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, e.g. the synthesis of anti-epileptic drugs and analgesic drugs.
As a food additive: DL- BATA-hydroxybutyrate can be used as a food additive, e.g. as an acidity regulator and antioxidant.
As a reagent for biological experiments: Sodium DL-BATA-hydroxybutyrate can be used as a reagent for biological experiments, e.g. as a component of cell culture media and as a biochemical reagent.
It is important to note that DL- BATA-hydroxybutyrate is toxic and first aid measures should be taken immediately in case of inadvertent exposure or ingestion.
